About
A Christian school with strong values and small classes where each child receives personal attention.

How we started
History
Founded in 2001 by Hilary and Norbert Kursten, the school began as Fish Hoek Christian School with just four students and a single teacher, Vanessa Oelofse, who also served as Principal. Classes were initially held in the home of Brad and Stella Hayman in Silverglades.
Over the years the school has grown steadily, as a prep school at first and then a full primary and high school by 2016. Today with a maximum of 12 students per grade The Rock Academy Primary School, grades 1-7, has been serving our community for over 20 years. Guided by the motto “A work of heart,” the school aims to guide every child to reach their full potential and become everything God created them to be.

Our core values
About us
What we believe, what we do and how we do it.
Explore a biblical worldview
Interpreting the world from a Biblical perspective. A worldview is the way we see the world, the lens through which we interpret the events and circumstances around us. A biblical worldview interprets the world from a Biblical perspective understanding that the Bible is the inerrant Word of God, that God is the almighty creator and sustainer of the universe.
Our worldview influences our understanding of God, morality, history and even ourselves. Every person has a worldview. Most worldviews except Christianity – are based on the concept of evolution.
Parents, teachers and peers have a major impact on the worldview of children.

Develop a Godly character
Character can be defined as a collection of personality traits within our behaviour. It is shown in our attitude, words and actions when responding to the situations and circumstances of life and it shapes how we treat one another. Success or failure in any situation depends, more than anything else on how we respond to events and circumstances. Therefore it is our character that determines our success
Christian character is aligning our lives so that our behaviour is Christ-like. It is the fruit that is produced when we abide in Christ. Paul speaks about this fruit of the spirit in Galatians.” But the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness and self-control.”Each of us should recognize the vital importance of good character to the success of our lives, communities, country and the world and undertake to improve our character and seek to influence others by helping them to develop better character.
“We must remember that intelligence is not enough. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.” – Martin Luther King Jr
Identify gifts and talents
“The greatest gift we can give our children is not our riches, but revealing to them their own.” Max Lucado
When our students realize that they were created on purpose for a purpose and that they have the potential to make an extraordinary difference in this life then we have succeeded in starting them off along the best pathway for their life. We believe that every child is born with an inherent set of characteristics that sets him apart and makes him unique.
Our job is to discover and reveal these to them so that they will know their purpose in life and grow to reach their maximum potential.
Success is…knowing your purpose in life, growing to reach your maximum potential, and sowing seeds that benefit others.” ― John C. Maxwell
“‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declared the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future’” (Jeremiah 29:11).
Build relationships
“Few things will pay you bigger dividends than the time and trouble you take to understand people. Nothing will give you greater satisfaction or bring you more happiness”. John Maxwell.
The very essence of God is relational, and that essential quality has been imprinted on us as humans. We are made to be in a relationship with our creator and with the rest of His creation. Everybody wants to and needs to be somebody and everyone can be somebody when somebody understands and believes in them.
Relationships are the glue that holds team members together. Whether that team is a classroom full of students, a family, a church or a sports team. Fostering good relationships between our staff and our students, their families and our greater community is a priority. Experience shows that students who feel secure, loved, respected and valued are more likely to open up and share with you and receive from you.
It is our desire to teach and demonstrate:
- Attentive listening
- Respect
- Trust
- Responsibility
- Kindness
When we build this kind of relationship all parties understand what their role is in the education process, and this is what leads to success.
“What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made in the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.” – Nelson Mandela
Pursue excellence
“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord and not for man.” Colossians 3:23
God is more interested in who you are than what you are. His will for your life is to be who He created you to be. What your job is, where you live, and who you marry is less important to Him. Those things happen as a result of who you are. Excellence begins in the heart; you cannot be ordinary in your heart and extraordinary in your life. Similarly, you will not be ordinary in your life if you are extraordinary in your heart.
Consider the following as you pursue excellence:
Excellence cannot occur without humility. A proud man will hide his inadequacies, but a humble man will expose them and seek to excel in his weakness. Only through the grace of God and recognition of the fact that we can do nothing apart from Christ can we succeed in the pursuit of excellence.
Excellence is always growing and always learning. No one is born excellent. Instead, excellence is developed over time by experience and the testing of faith
Excellence is developed in the details. If you do the little things diligently every day to improve, excellence becomes attainable.
Excellence demands a sceptical inquirer. This enables you to make sound decisions, pursue only things worth pursuing, and function as a trusted resource in every matter of life.
Excellence is not a skill – it is an attitude (Ralph Martson).
Excellence is an attitude that touches every area of your life. You are called to be excellent in everything you do (2 Corinthians 8:7).
True excellence means you dedicate yourself fully to everything you do, as working for the Lord (Colossians 3:23).
Excellence does not compare itself to others. Don’t look outward to measure your excellence; instead look inward and compare your growth to where you were in the past (Galatians 6:4).
Curriculum
What we teach
- Apply to the rock
At The Rock Academy, we follow the National Curriculum – CAPS, but endeavour to give our children a biblical worldview.
Small classes
Our small classes allow for individual attention and a very controlled, quiet and peaceful working environment where optimal learning can take place.
As an extension, our students are encouraged to participate in external national examinations. These include the Baptist Union Scripture exam, the Conquesta exams and the Mathematics Olympiad exam.
Reading is the foundation of all learning. Our Foundation Phase students enjoy weekly visits to the public library, while our Intermediate and Senior Phase students have access to our school library.
Ongoing evaluation
Students are evaluated throughout the term. Terms 1 and 3 are continuous assessment terms. Terms 2 and 4 are examination terms.
At our annual Prize Giving recognition is given not only for academic achievement but for achievement in all cultural subjects and sports. Growth in character is also recognized.

- Apply to the rock
We believe that students develop confidence and intelligence through their cultural activities. Our curriculum includes weekly periods of Music and Drama, Physical Education, and ICT and Coding. This allows our students the opportunity to develop social skills, teamwork, perseverance, freedom of expression and confidence, allowing them to relate to the world creatively.
Swimming is a life skill and lessons are offered to all grade one students
Private piano, recorder, flute, guitar and violin lessons are offered by our Music teacher.

- Apply to the rock
Through our discipleship programme, we desire to teach our students what it means to truly be a follower of Christ and how to “grow in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man” as Jesus did.
The programme includes understanding the foundation of the Christian faith, studying Bible characters and Godly character traits, and learning the books of the Bible and scripture in fun ways.
Exploring Creationism and Apologetics. Singing and dancing and working through the 7 C’s of History. Grade 7s receive leadership training and complete the Youth Alpha Course.

- Apply to the rock
Our outreach programme, which is an integral part of our school life, aims to be a blessing to our local community and to allow our students the opportunity to serve others and to foster a sense of compassion and community.
This is done through each grade selecting at least one outreach project per year. These projects may vary from year to year.
Care Packages to False Bay Hospital and Living Hope Hospice.
Valentine’s Day flowers and treats to the elderly at Carlisle Lodge.
Easter Outreach to a local Masiphumelele creche.
Non-perishables to the Jones Safe House.
Silver for Babies (The Sweet Pea Foundation) to False Bay Maternity Unit.
Tins for TEARS (animal rescue organisation)
Second-hand shoe project for children in the Ocean View Community.
