This is the filler-in subject that gives teachers a chance to plan and mark and do our children really need it?

  • To understand why our children need art, we need to understand what exactly art is. In the book, “The Everyday Work of Art,” author Eric Booth explains that art is a process. It is a way of looking at things and performing tasks in such a way that they enhance our everyday lives. Art is more than paper and crayons, and pots of paint. Instead, it is a way to put things together and make them work in a pleasing way.
  • As parents we don’t want our children to only achieve academically.  We also want them to be life long learners who are perceptive and analytical observers, are able to process visual and tactile information, reflect, find meaning and be creative and imaginative thinkers.  Through art they are developing and perfecting all these skills.
  • Studies show that children involved in art classes generally perform better in school in all other areas.  According to Howard Gardener’s Theory of Multiple Intelligence’s, pupils who take art classes develop an increased capacity to learn because they expand their learning styles, beyond linguistic and mathematical reasoning, in their traditional classes.
  • Dr. James Catterall from UCLA found that students who took arts classes performed better on standardized tests and had higher grades than students who did not participate in art education. It is a proven fact that memory is enhanced, understanding is increased, and the ability to communicate symbolically is learnt. Through art children have an outlet to express their ideas and opinions and communicate their feelings in a unique way.
  • Most pupils don’t pursue art as a career in their adult lives. However they will all use the skills they have developed through the creation of art and continue to see the world through new eyes.

As William Blake says:

‘To see a world in a grain of sand, and a heaven in a wildflower… hold infinity in the palm of your hand, and eternity in an hour…’
