The classes come to ICT for 45 minutes once a week, but the Centre is always available to them. We make every effort to streamline what we do in ICT to complement what the Class Teacher is doing in their Curriculum.
The world around us that once seemed huge and unreachable, has over the last decade become a global village where interaction between people from countries all around the globe have virtually instant access to one another. We also participate in global ICT projects where various Grades collaborate with other schools from around the world.
- In order to keep up with the times, in ICT we don’t only learn the basics of how to do work on a computer, we also learn how to make the computer work for us.
- We “do work on the computer” by using extensively the Microsoft Office Suites and by utlizing online sites to practice things like Maths, Reading, Spelling, etc. We also take part in global learning events such as World Maths, Science and Spelling Days, where we compete in real time against students from other countries.
- We “let the computer work for us” by making use of various online tools that help us achieve our outcome but in a more creative way. For example, instead of drawing a timeline, we find a Timeline site, and create it online: It’s printable and always available. Instead of writing an Oral, we find a great presentation site, like Prezi, and present our Oral with images, links or movies to create extra interest. From Grade 4 all students are allocated an email address which they can use to verify online accounts set up at school or to email work to school that they have done at home.
- By making use of these Web 2.0 tools, we engage our children more, they are excited to learn because they are using the tools that fascinate them most.
